My name is Nicole Carney, and I am a sophomore student in the Public Leadership Scholars Program at the University of Maryland, College Park. I am pursuing degrees in both accounting and finance. My school e-mail is [email protected].
I am originally from Howard County, Maryland and I have always been a huge fan of the University of Maryland. It has always been my dream to come to school here. I chose to participate in the Public Leadership Scholars Program here at Maryland, because I knew that this would be the way for me to learn how to truly make a difference in the world and in my community. While I was in high school, I spent my weekends volunteering in Baltimore City. I learned a lot about helping others, but I never understood what was needed to make a true difference. Eventually, I hope to take the knowledge I have gained through this program, and combine it with everything I learn from my major, in order to truly help to create and implement policy that can change our world for the better. I have always enjoyed solving problems and helping others, and I think that being a part of the Public Leadership Scholars Program here has helped me to define my goals and come up with effective ways to solve problems that are extremely significant in today's society. In the future, I want to remain in the Maryland and D.C. area and work with local and national leaders in order to identify problems and create informed solutions.
Apart from academics, I participate in a variety of extracurricular activities including being an active member of my sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, in which we emphasize philanthropic acts and honorable values.
